I just had to switch to a full linux distro. You had a working mic and a camera that is not working, the locate feature, standard on most linux distros, (to my knowledge) was missing. Lastly and most frustratingly, it was incomplete. The storage was awful (although I think that that was just the computer itself), and like you said, the linux distro is a weird debian thing. It was awful, apps would not run, or they would run incredibly slowly. I got one with Intel celeron, 4 gigs RAM and 16 gigs storage (the average chromebook specs because high end chromosome are rare and expensive, not worth it). I used to have chromeOS (I replaced it with galliumOS). I got a chrome book for my 12th birthday, and nobody expected me to get into coding, (least of all me) so my thoughts on linux for chromeOS might be biased. Or maybe we can delegate the build process to an external server with much more power? Speaking of which: the best Chromebooks seem to be US only. It matter less when you are learning programming, you are not typically compiling huge projects.īut still Chromebook are not exactly powerful.īuy the best Chromebook you can find if you intend to use them for development.

But to actually program on it, you will be asked to wipe your chromebook and install the insecure developer mode. Update: I would not recommend doing Android programming on a Chromebook for now.

awesome-online-ide | ?️ A list of awesome online development environments. My results so far: not perfect but a lot of potential, Chromebooks can do more than you think. I started to wonder: what about Chromebooks? MacBook Pro are too expansive and I didn't use Windows since 10+ years. So newer devices will support Crostini out of the box.I want to do programming workshops and I'm wondering what laptops to provide to my students. Unless otherwise specified, all devices launched in 2019 will support Linux (Beta)". You can find a list of supported Chromebook devices here, but according to that doc, "the Chromebooks launched before 2019 that support Linux (Beta) are listed below. This guide will cover how to set up your programming environment on a Crostini supported Chromebook device. Set up Linux (Crostini) on your Chromebook I also found it difficult to set up my programming environment due to the lack of tutorials so I decided to make my own after trying a bunch of different things. If you end up using a Chromebook as your primary programming laptop make sure you have at least 8GB of RAM and something faster than a M3 like the i5 Pixelbook Go. I don't necessarily think this is the best "programming laptop" due to the lack of RAM. I ended up picking up an HP x2 Chromebook as my replacement device since I wanted to try out a ChromeOS device. My 2013 Apple Macbook Pro's battery started to get worse in 2020 so I started looking for a replacement laptop.
